The Tower's neon spire and globe - click for photo of TheatreThe crown jewel of Fresno's hottest nightlife neighborhood, the Tower Theatre lends its name to an area which has been a community focus of arts and entertainment for generations, Fresno's historic Tower District.

Opened in 1939 as a 20th Century Fox Movie House the Tower Theatre was restored in 1990 and reopened as a center for the performing arts. In 1992, the theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Considered to be the finest facility of its kind in California, the Tower Theatre boasts an authentic art deco theme throughout the interior and exterior. The covered foyer of Italian Terrazo, as well as the adjoining lobby with its beautiful historic Carvarts glass etching, serve as a mingling area for patrons between acts. It is also conveniently available for refreshments or concession sales.

Anchored by the theatre, the Tower District has seen a booming resurgence with many new restaurants and clubs opening within a four mile radius. The theatre is located at the central intersection of Wishon and Olive avenues, relatively close to the Fresno-Yosemite International Air Terminal, Freeway 41, Hwy 99, and major hotels.

The theatre is a 1940's moderne deco masterpiece. Located adjacent to the theatre is Pinot Wine Bar & Bistro and across the street is Roger Rocka's Dinner Theatre. Within a short walking distance are Sequoia Brewing Company, Irene's Cafe, Starbuck's Coffee, Livingstone's Bar & Grill, Grandmarie's Chicken Pie Shop, Veni Vidi Vici, Cuca's Mexican restaurant, Me-n-Ed's Pizza Parlor, The 2nd Space Theatre, and many other great Tower District dining spots.

Fresno Filmworks
Fresno Filmworks Presents "The Wrecking Crew"

Fresno Filmworks presents the music documentary "The Wrecking Crew" at the historic Tower Theatre. The movie tells the story of the unsung musicians behind the most popular songs of the 1960's and early '70s, when the Grammy for "Record of the Year" went to recordings made by The Wrecking Crew for six years in a row. They worked as the studio players behind living legends such as Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and many more icons of American pop music. What the Funk Brothers did for Motown, The Wrecking Crew did for the "West Coast Sound," which became a dominant cultural force around the world. A labor of love a decade in the making, the movie is produced and directed by first-time filmmaker Denny Tedesco, who will make a special appearance. Tedesto is the son of The Wrecking Crew's legendary late guitarist Tommy Tedesco, one of the featured musicians who provided the backbeat, the bottom, and the melody that drove dozens of number-one hits. Includes interviews with Brian Wilson, Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Herb Alpert, Glen Campbell, Gary Lewis, and Crew members themselves. Rated PG.

Home Free - Crazy Life Tour

When country a cappella band Home Free was crowned Season 4 Champions of NBC's The Sing-Off this past December, their victory was by no means the beginnings of a career for the five country stars from Minnesota… rather it was a satisfying culmination of nearly a decade of hard work and commitment to a vocal craft growing in popularity.

PAUL BROWN
Paul Brown

Truth B Told, Paul Brown on his new multi-faceted Woodward Avenue Records release is pushing the envelope where few contemporary jazz artists dare to go these days. A decade into his solo career – which began with the 2004 release of Up Front and includes his 2012 Woodward Avenue collection The Funky Joint - the two time Grammy Award winner masterfully sets a high bar for his genre by digging deeper into soul and blues, playing his 1963 Gibson Johnny Smith L-5 edgier and with more abandon - and bringing the freewheeling creative spirit of bands like The Crusaders and Steely Dan into an exciting modern context.
