Fresno Filmworks Movie:Tangerines

Fresno Filmworks presents the Estonian drama “Tangerines,” an internationally acclaimed film nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, at the historic Tower Theatre. Set in 1992, during the growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists in the wake of the Soviet Union’s dissolution, the movie tells the story of two Estonian immigrant farmers who decide to remain in Georgia long enough to harvest their tangerine crop. When war in the historically disputed territory comes to their doorsteps, one farmer takes in two wounded soldiers from opposite sides. The soldiers vow to kill each other when they recover, but their extended convalescence has a humanizing effect that yields a chance to transcend ethnic divides. In Estonian, Russian, and Georgian, with English subtitles. Not Rated.

Movie: Ballet 422

From first rehearsal to world premiere, BALLET 422 takes us backstage at New York City Ballet as Justin Peck, a young up-and-coming choreographer, crafts a new work. BALLET 422 illuminates the process behind the creation of a single ballet within the ongoing cycle of work at one of the world’s great ballet companies.

New York City Ballet, under the artistic direction of Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins, boasts a roster of more than 90 elite dancers and a repertory of works by many of the greatest choreographers in the history of the art form. When 25-year-old NYCB dancer Justin Peck begins to emerge as a promising young choreographer, he is commissioned to create a new ballet for the Company’s 2013 Winter Season.

With unprecedented access to an elite world, the film follows Peck as he collaborates with musicians, lighting designers, costume designers and his fellow dancers to create Paz de la Jolla, NYCB’s 422nd new ballet. BALLET 422 is an unembellished vérité portrait of a process that has never before been documented at New York City Ballet in its entirety.

Paul Brown
and his Band

Paul Brown and his Band

Truth B Told, Paul Brown on his new multi-faceted Woodward Avenue Records release is pushing the envelope where few contemporary jazz artists dare to go these days. A decade into his solo career – which began with the 2004 release of Up Front and includes his 2012 Woodward Avenue collection The Funky Joint - the two time Grammy Award winner masterfully sets a high bar for his genre by digging deeper into soul and blues, playing his 1963 Gibson Johnny Smith L-5 edgier and with more abandon - and bringing the freewheeling creative spirit of bands like The Crusaders and Steely Dan into an exciting modern context.
